5 Pro Tips for a Better Screenplay Competition Submission

By Valeria Perea

4 Mar 2025

If you’re entering any screenplay competition— even perhaps the Canadian Short Screenplay Competition, you might want to read this whole article before clicking ‘submit’.

While every script is different, there are a few certain sure-fire tips and recommendations to consider in order to ensure your work stands out from the crowd and makes a lasting impact.

Tip #1: Write On A Mirror

Act as if the page is a mirror. The most memorable scripts feature a unique perspective or an unexpected take on a familiar subject. Judges read countless submissions, so make yours distinctive by embracing your personal style and viewpoint. Avoid generic storytelling— lean into your experiences and creativity to craft something uniquely you.

Tip #2: Be Our Tour Guide

We are tourists in your world, show us something new in your pages. Common storylines and overused tropes won’t make your script stand out. We said it above and we’ll say it again: competition judges see numerous submissions daily, so steer clear of predictable scenarios. Instead, take us on a journey of fresh angles, unexpected twists and compelling characters to captivate us up until the end of your tour.

Tip #3: What Came First; The Log or the Paper?

Before lines on paper, the paper was a tree. A tree becomes a log—becomes the very page that—this metaphor doesn’t really make sense as we’re 100% paper-free, but anyway— Your logline is your first impression— Make. It. Count.

A well-crafted logline hooks the reader immediately and provides a clear, intriguing snapshot of your story. Keep it concise, engaging and PACKED with intrigue to ensure your script gets opened with enthusiasm.

Tip #4: PTA 1:1 1–8 “In the Beginning, There Were Words”

Okay… you got us. The Gospel of Paul didn’t quite say that, but we think he’d definitely agree with the sentiment; a well-structured script has a clear beginning, middle and end. Pay close attention to plot progression, character arcs and pacing. Ensure consistency in time, location and character actions. Additionally, double-check that the rules of your story’s world remain consistent throughout.

Tip #5: Bullet-Proof It

Even the best stories can be undermined by careless errors. Bullet-proof your script thoroughly for typos, grammar mistakes and formatting inconsistencies. Double-check character and location names (you may not believe us, but we’ve received submissions without either and sometimes both!). Review your punctuation and sentence structure to ensure a professional, polished submission.

FIN.

Writing a strong screenplay is more than just telling any old story— it’s about creating an experience that resonates with your audience. If your script takes us on a new and exciting journey, reflects your voice and shows that you believe in your script, you’ll be well on your way to set yourself apart from the rest of the batch.

Submissions are open for the 6th annual Canadian Short Screenplay Competition now until April 13th, 2025 via FilmFreeway.

Bullet-Proofed? 1 through 5— check! Get on your way and submit your script today.
