CHASING THE HARD NO

By Jason Long

Send a script, submit a bible, pitch a producer, best case scenario?

We love it we want in let’s develop let’s make it. Hooray!!

Wow. That was easy, right?

No. Not easy. But it’s what we writers all hope for, the resounding, decisive, enthusiastic, obvious, no-bones-about-it HARD YES. It’s rare, sometimes it feels impossible, but it validates both your belief in the thing, because others you (hopefully) hold in high regard are also now believers in said thing.

But let’s be honest. What do we mostly get instead of the HARD YES?

Oh, it’s cool. Yeah, it’s different. I like it. Let me consult with my team and we will get back to you never or in one to seventeen years that cool?

Not here to producer bash. Some of us writers are insufferably polite and we target one producer at a time and wait for their response (Stop doing that). They have forty or fifty of us, maybe more, inundating them, all of the time. They are trying to balance honesty, and sometimes — although it may seem “nice” at the time — they are being Canadian. Even if they aren’t Canadian, they are being folksy and hopeful and optimistic to a fault and not wanting to hurt feelings.

Or, they just want out of this awkward pitch session. And still do not want to hurt feelings. It sucks to wait. Sucks to feel like you’re being strung along, even when you’re not. You just don’t know. Get used to that. Be okay with not knowing what they think, when they will get back to you, or if they ever will.

This is why I love, love, looooove the HARD NO. Quick, to the point, no room for misinterpretation. Gonna be a no, Dawg. Great! We can all move on now. We shake their hand, genuinely thank them for their time, cross them off the list, no bridge burnt, and we continue the search. To find our team. Our Sensei’s who will get it, will support it, and fight for it.

Who will get us, will support us, and for us. And with us. Five fingers make the fist.

Happy upcoming rejections, everyone! Enjoy it. Because when the HARD YES happens for you, one day, you won’t even know what to do. Or think. You won’t even know it happened.

“Could you freaking repeat that, please???”

That’s going to be a great, great day. Trust.
