TOO TOO TOO TOO TOO MANY THINGS…

By Jason Long

I missed submitting a blog two weeks ago. I got alllll up in my head about stuff, human stuff, work and house and kids and pets and taxes and mortality and morality.

And then convinced myself no one is reading these, no one is paying attention, no one cares.

In the grand scheme, that doesn’t matter. Much like writing scripts, I’m mostly good about prioritizing Audience Of One. Me. If I’m amused, if I feel better, maaaaybe someone else will, too.

But I noticed I missed a bloggy-blog. And it irritated me.

Fear not because the next shiny object or fire to put out came a rumbling into my being and I became duly consumed, again.

With getting that grant application out the door. And then another. Auditions, both voice and film. End of year meetings at the job-job. Trying to schedule a massage, my back is mucked up, my cat is stuck up, and then and then and then.

Remember my last blog 4 weeks ago now where I said that creative heater will end? Oh yeah that happened, too. Molasses mind engaged, took hold, dragged me down. I wallowed, I folded laundry, and found more time to re-re-re-re-re-watch Twin Peaks: The Return. And test various advances in the practice of cheese pizza around my ‘hood…

It’s the rub of taking on too much. We do it for multiple reasons. Stay busy. Cast a wide net. Some of us were taught (or scared into believing that) saying no to opportunities is foolish and they’ll never come around again so grab it while it’s hot.

But, it can’t sustain, it won’t sustain, so, saying no on occasion is not a death sentence. Or settle for a “not right now” response. Timing matters. Our capacities matter. And the inevitable ebb and flow is utterly out of our control.

I’m not sure how to end this.

There.

That’ll do.

Submissions are now closed for the 7th annual Canadian Short Screenplay Competition. The winner will be announced at the Yorkton Film Festival’s Golden Sheaf Awards Gala on May 23rd. Stay tuned for details of the upcoming deadlines for the 8th Edition of the CSSC.
